Sunset Morning

Oscar woke up sobbing, not even a mug of hot chocolate could soothe his sorrow. That's when Ruby came down the stairs, walking like a zombie. Had he woken her up? Oscar had been crying all night. And seeing her there almost made it worse.

"What are you doing awake?" Ruby wondered groggily. "I didn't scare you, did I?" She wiped the crusties from her eyes, giving him a nervous look. Oscar dried his tears, turning away in the hopes it would stop. "What's wrong? Was it a nightmare?"

"You could say that," he replied. Ruby went to grab Oscar's hand, it was shaking. The tears automatically started back up, their hands lightly brushing against each other. The girl was very concerned for the boy. Why was he like that?

"Oscar what was your dream about?" She had sat down next to him on the couch. The boy's lips pursed, struggling to tell her what it was. "It's okay, I'm right here." That was the problem, and she had no clue.

"It's not the first time I've had this dream. Well, one like it, at least." Oscar's tone was soft, Ruby didn't know what to do. "The night that Atlas fell, I think I had this dream. You were upset about losing Yang, so talked with you. It was like you hadn't-"

Oscar burst into a frenzy of tears, his breath becoming hurried and shallow. The boy's lungs hiccupped with effort. The two were silent for several seconds. Finally, the tears slowed again. Oscar continued speaking.

"When I woke up, I was crying," he admitted. "Part of me still believed you were okay, but I still felt... There was this overwhelm of grief and pain. I wasn't myself."

"I was always okay," Ruby said. "That part of you that believed it was right." She gave him a tight hug, reassuring him the best she could. Oscar quickly reciprocated. "This is going to sound weird, but... do you still have feelings for me?"

"Ruby." Oscar smiled. "Yes, and the way I feel about you hasn't changed since I confessed. It hasn't changed since we met." She smiled, having to look away to hide the fact she was blushing. Oscar placed his hand over her hand.

"I'm glad you're okay." The boy blushed red, recalling the times she'd said that before then. "And I'm glad we're like this. Together." Oscar nodded. "It's nice." Their eyes met, and neither wanted to look away. They were happy.

"It's weird to think that a week ago, we were fighting for our lives," he said. "And a year ago, we were fighting in a war we didn't even know existed." The boy sighed and laid back onto the pillow he'd been sleeping on.

"Yeah, it is pretty weird," Ruby agreed. Oscar sat up again, alert. "But it is who we are, and that may never fully change. We've been through a lot together, and now we get to watch the future unfold."

"Right. The future." Even just a week before, he never would have thought about past the war. But now, that it was all behind them, it was all he could think of then. "Our future." She giggled at him.

"Our future." Within moments, the sky seemed to clear of storm clouds. And as the sun fell into the sky, so did joy.
